A Land Imagined is a 2018 crime thriller film directed by Yeo Siew Hua. The movie follows the story of a Chinese construction worker named Wang (played by Liu Xiaoyi) who goes missing from a land reclamation site in Singapore. Gong (played by Peter Yu), a police investigator, is assigned to the case. As Gong uncovers more information about Wang's life, he begins to realize that the man's disappearance may be linked to the illegal activities of the foreign workers' dormitory where Wang lived.
As Gong delves deeper into the case, he struggles with his own sleeplessness and eventually becomes deeply involved in Wang's life. In a surreal sequence that blurs the lines between reality and dreams, Gong finds himself wandering through the vast expanse of the land reclamation site, trying to connect with Wang on a metaphysical level.
The film provides a stark commentary on the exploitation and oppression of migrant workers in Singapore and other developed nations. It also explores themes of displacement, loneliness, and the yearning for human connection. The movie won the Golden Leopard award at the Locarno Film Festival in 2018.
