A Family Tour is a 2018 drama film directed by Ying Liang. The film tells the story of a mainland Chinese filmmaker named Yang Shu, who is living in exile in Hong Kong due to the politically-charged nature of her work. Yang Shu's mother lives in mainland China and is refused permission to leave the country to see her daughter. In order to reunite with her mother, Yang Shu decides to travel to Taiwan, where her latest film is being screened at a festival, and schedules a family tour for her mother to come and visit her from China. The film examines the complex family relationships that are impacted by political circumstances, as well as the challenges faced by those who must navigate the often difficult and unpredictable nature of government policies. The movie also highlights the intricacies of Taiwan's political and cultural landscape, and the tension between its identity as a separate entity from China and its continued political connections to it. Through the film, director Ying Liang provides a poignant assessment of the situation for those who have been exiled from their homes and their loved ones, and the emotional toll such circumstances can take on individuals and families.
