The movie follows Katie Gibbs, a talented singer-songwriter who dreams of attending a prestigious music school. She lives in a rundown attic with her overbearing and cruel stepmother, Gail, and her stepsister, Bev. Gail forces Katie to work as a housemaid and forbids her from pursuing her passion for music.
One day, Katie meets Luke Morgan, a handsome and charming fellow student who also has a passion for music. Luke encourages Katie to perform at a school talent show, which could be her ticket to music school. However, Gail sabotages Katie's audition by tampering with her shoes, causing her to trip and fall.
Despite the setback, Katie continues to pursue her dream with Luke's support. They collaborate on a song that earns them a spot in a music video contest. However, Gail and Bev steal the song and claim it as their own, ruining Katie's chances of winning the contest and attending music school.
Determined to fight back, Katie gathers evidence of Gail and Bev's deception and exposes them at the school's gala event. She performs her original song and wins the hearts of everyone, including Luke, who confesses his love for her. In the end, Katie's dream comes true as she gets accepted into music school and begins her journey towards a successful career in music.
