The movie 84 Charing Cross Road is based on a real-life story and it portrays the enduring friendship between Helene Hanff, a struggling writer in New York, and Frank Doel, a bookseller in London. The story takes place over the course of 20 years, starting in 1949 when Helene Hanff first contacts Marks & Co. bookstore in London to purchase some rare books.

Just as they are planning to finally meet face-to-face, Doel becomes seriously ill and Hanff's visits to London are canceled. Despite Hanff's best efforts to help, Doel passes away, but Hanff's affection for him remains strong and she continues to write about their friendship.
