800 Bullets is a Spanish film directed by Álex de la Iglesia. It was released in 2002 and stars Sancho Gracia as Julián Torralba, the former stuntman. The film deals with themes of fading glory, family relationships, and the need to hold fast to the past.
Julián lives in a trailer on the abandoned movie set, where he runs a small theater for tourists to watch re-enactments of famous Western scenes. He is constantly haunted by memories of his son, who died in a stunt gone wrong years ago. When Carlos, his grandson, shows up on the set, Julián is initially resistant to letting him stay, but gradually accepts him as part of the group.
The other stuntmen are a motley crew of misfits, including a former Nazi soldier who loves to tell war stories and a transgender stuntwoman who is still bitter about the discrimination she faced in her career. They take Carlos under their wing and teach him how to perform stunts and play cowboy.
However, their idyllic existence is threatened when Laura, Carlos’ mother, comes looking for him. She is a high-powered businesswoman who wants to turn the movie set into a theme park. Julián and the other stuntmen refuse to leave without a fight, and they try to use their skills as performers to convince Laura and her colleagues that the movie set is worth preserving.
800 Bullets is a visually stunning film that pays tribute to the golden age of the Spaghetti Western. It is a bittersweet meditation on the passing of time and the resilience of the human spirit.
