8 Women (original French title 8 Femmes) is a 2002 French dark comedy-musical film directed by François Ozon. The film is set in the 1950s, in a large and isolated country estate, where eight women gather for Christmas holidays. The eight women are the family matriarch Gaby (Danielle Darrieux), her two daughters, Suzon (Virginie Ledoyen) and Catherine (Ludivine Sagnier), her sister-in-law Pierrette (Fanny Ardant), her sister Augustine (Isabelle Huppert), the maid Louise (Emmanuelle Béart), the cook Chanel (Firmine Richard), and the chambermaid Madame Chanelle (Catherine Deneuve).
As the women gather for their holiday celebrations, they discover that the family patriarch, Marcel, has been murdered with a knife in his back. With heavy snowfall blocking the house, the eight women are trapped inside and must work together to solve the mystery and unmask the killer. Each woman has her own motive and secret, and as tensions rise, the women's relationships with one another are tested.
Throughout the film, there are musical numbers and dance sequences, which add a whimsical and surreal element to the story. As the women try to solve the murder mystery, they reveal their own dark secrets and desires, ultimately leading to a surprising and shocking conclusion.
8 Women features an all-star cast of some of France's most celebrated actresses, including Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, and Fanny Ardant. The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for numerous awards, including a César Award for Best Costume Design.
