7 Days in Entebbe is a political thriller based on the true events of the 1976 hijacking of Air France Flight 139 by Palestinian and German terrorists. The terrorists, belonging to several radical leftist groups, boarded the flight in Athens, Greece, with the intention of flying it to Uganda, where they planned to negotiate the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
The movie follows the hijacking as it unfolds, showing the passengers' terror and confusion as the hijackers take control of the plane and divert it to Entebbe airport in Uganda, where they are welcomed by sympathetic Ugandan President, Idi Amin.
The terrorists demand the release of 53 Palestinians and 40 prisoners held in other countries in exchange for the passengers' release. Israel refuses to negotiate with the terrorists and instead plans a daring rescue mission.
The mission, which took place on July 4th, 1976, involved sending the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) commandos on a long-range operation to Entebbe, more than 2000 miles away from Israel. The commandos landed at the airport in the dead of night, and over the course of an hour, they killed the hijackers, freed the hostages and destroyed a large number of Ugandan military aircraft.
During the mission, three hostages were killed, as well as all seven hijackers and some Ugandan soldiers. However, the majority of the passengers were rescued and flown back to Israel, where they were greeted as heroes.
The movie depicts the tense negotiations between Israel and the terrorists, the complex planning involved in the rescue mission, and the bravery of the commandos who risked their lives to save the hostages.
