After Harry Mitchell refuses to pay the blackmailers, they begin to escalate their threats and violence against him and his family. They force Harry to withdraw $105,000 from his business, and also demand that he follow their instructions or else they will release the video to the public.
Harry seeks the help of a private investigator, who discovers that the blackmailers are part of a larger criminal organization led by a man named Alan Raimy. Harry decides to take matters into his own hands and plans to confront Raimy, but the plan backfires and Harry ends up being kidnapped by Raimy's henchmen.
Raimy reveals that he wants Harry to be the middle-man in a scheme to launder money through his manufacturing company. Harry is torn between risking his company and going to the police, but ultimately decides to cooperate with Raimy to protect his family.
As the plan unfolds, Harry becomes more involved with Raimy's criminal world and must make difficult moral choices. He also becomes the target of an FBI investigation and realizes that he may not be able to protect himself or his family from the dangerous consequences of his actions.
The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Elmore Leonard and stars Roy Scheider as Harry Mitchell, as well as Ann-Margret, John Glover, and Clarence Williams III as the blackmailers. It was directed by John Frankenheimer and was released in 1986.
