The 27-year-old guy in question is named Adam, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He is a somewhat socially awkward but otherwise healthy young man living in Seattle with his artist girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) and working as a public radio producer. One day, he begins experiencing persistent back pain and undergoes a series of tests that lead to a devastating diagnosis: he has a rare form of spinal cancer.
Adam's world is turned upside down as he grapples with the harsh reality of his diagnosis and the uncertainty of his future. He begins treatment with the help of his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen), a pot-smoking slacker who does his best to keep Adam's spirits up with jokes and distractions. Adam's mother (Anjelica Huston) is also a constant presence in his life, offering support even as she deals with her own aging father and troublesome husband.
As Adam navigates the challenges of chemotherapy and the emotional toll of his illness, he also embarks on a tentative romance with his young therapist Katherine (Anna Kendrick). Through it all, he explores what it means to be truly alive and to fight for a life worth living, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
The film, directed by Jonathan Levine and written by Will Reiser (who himself survived a similar diagnosis), strikes a delicate balance between humor and pathos, capturing both the absurdity and the heartache of Adam's situation. Gordon-Levitt delivers a nuanced and deeply felt performance as a man coming to terms with his mortality, while Rogen provides much-needed comic relief. The supporting cast is also strong, with standout turns from Huston and Kendrick.
Overall, 50/50 is a moving and surprisingly funny film about a subject that is often treated with the utmost seriousness. It offers a poignant reminder to appreciate life's joys and sorrows, even in the darkest of times.
