The movie 5 Centimeters per Second is a beautifully animated coming-of-age love story that follows the life of Takaki Tono from childhood to adulthood. The movie is divided into three parts, with each part representing a different stage in Takaki's life.
In the first part, Takaki is a young boy who becomes close friends with Akari Shinohara. The two share a deep connection and spend a lot of time together. However, due to circumstances beyond their control, the two are forced to move away from each other. Despite their distance, they continue to write letters to each other, hoping to one day be reunited.
In the second part, Takaki is a high school student who has a close friend named Kanae Sumida. Kanae has been in love with Takaki for a long time, but he only sees her as a friend. As they spend more time together, Kanae sees that Takaki is still longing for Akari, and she realizes that she can never be truly happy with him.
In the final part, Takaki is a young adult living in Tokyo. He is unhappy with his life and feels lost in the cold, impersonal city. He is unable to form meaningful connections with people and struggles to find direction in his life. He reflects on his past, wondering if things would have been different if he had stayed with Akari or pursued a relationship with Kanae.
Throughout the movie, the theme of distance and separation is present, as Takaki longs for meaningful connections but is unable to find them. The stunning animation and soundtrack create a melancholy mood, perfectly capturing the bittersweet nature of Takaki's story.
