In 47 Ronin, Kai is an orphan who was taken in by Lord Asano, a powerful lord in feudal Japan. However, Kai is constantly bullied and ostracized for being half-Japanese, half-English, and having been raised by demons in the forest. When Lord Asano is deceived into attacking a visiting shogun, he is ordered to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) which results in the banishment of his samurai.
Kai is expelled from Asano's service and joins Oishi, the leader of the now ronin (masterless samurai) who seek revenge on Lord Kira, the overlord who orchestrated the attack on Lord Asano. However, the ronin are sworn to secrecy and can't act on their revenge plot until the time is right.
Meanwhile, Lord Kira is plotting to gain more power by marrying Princess Mika, the daughter of the shogun. Kai and the ronin must navigate treacherous obstacles such as fighting mystical beasts and navigating a labyrinth to retrieve the mythical Sword of the Dragon that can defeat Lord Kira.
In the final showdown, the ronin storm Lord Kira's castle and engage in a bloody battle against his army of warriors. Kai and Oishi face off against the villainous overlord in a one-on-one duel that ends with Lord Kira being killed by the Sword of the Dragon.
The ronin complete their mission, bringing honour to their master and avenging his death. However, they also know that they must commit seppuku for their disobedience, as they broke their code of silence. The movie ends with a solemn and respectful ceremony for the fallen ronin.
