In 40 Pounds of Trouble, the casino manager is Steve McCluskey (played by Tony Curtis), a cynical and world-weary man who has never been much of a family man. However, when he is tasked with taking care of a young girl named Penny (played by Claire Wilcox) for a day at Disneyland, his life takes an unexpected turn.
Penny is a mischievous and precocious little girl who seems to delight in causing trouble wherever she goes. Steve is initially annoyed by her antics, but as the day goes on, he begins to warm up to her and even starts to have some fun.
However, trouble is never far away, and Steve finds himself in a series of misadventures as he tries to keep up with Penny's endless energy and curiosity. Along the way, he meets a number of colorful characters, including a lounge singer (played by Suzanne Pleshette) and a group of gangsters who mistake him for someone else.
Through it all, Steve and Penny form a bond that ultimately changes both of their lives for the better. As they say goodbye at the end of the day, Steve realizes that he has a newfound appreciation for the joys of family and the simple pleasures of life.
