Matt Sullivan (Josh Harnett) is a web designer in San Francisco who is still recovering from a bad breakup with his ex-girlfriend Nicole. His sexual relationships are now short and meaningless, and he's struggling to find a deeper connection. In the lead-up to Lent, he finds himself thinking about how much sex dominates his life, and so he decides to give it up entirely for the 40 days of the season.
At first, Matt finds it relatively easy to avoid sexual temptation. His coworkers mock him for his strange vow, but he's committed to sticking to it. However, things become much harder when he meets Erica (Shannyn Sossamon), a beautiful girl who works at a art supply store. Matt is immediately drawn to Erica, and begins to fall for her. However, he must keep his vow and not engage in any sexual activity.
Despite his best efforts, Matt finds himself struggling to resist Erica's charms, particularly as they grow closer and begin to spend more time together. Meanwhile, Nicole becomes increasingly jealous of Matt's connection with Erica, and sets out to sabotage their budding relationship.
As Lent comes to an end, Matt begins to question whether his no-sex vow was worth it. He's had to confront a lot of his own insecurities and anxieties about sex and relationships, but he's also missed out on the opportunity to be intimate with the woman he's fallen for. In the end, Matt and Erica do end up together, but on their own terms, and without the pressure of Matt's vow hanging over their relationship.
