Altruistic and hopeless romantic Jane Nichols (played by Katherine Heigl) has always been a bridesmaid, never the bride. Over the years, she has accumulated 27 bridesmaid dresses, each more hideous than the last. She has been the loyal shoulder to cry on for all of her friends, and in the process has fallen in love with her boss, George (Edward Burns), who she believes is her one true love.
However, her world is turned upside down when her younger sister, Tess (Malin Akerman), comes to town and announces that she is getting married. Not only that, but she also reveals that she is marrying George, the man Jane has been secretly in love with for years.
To make matters worse, Jane is asked to be the maid of honor at the wedding. As she tries to keep her feelings for George hidden, Jane finds herself juggling the demands of her job as a wedding planner, her sister's unrealistic expectations, and her own broken heart.
Throughout the film, Jane is torn between her love for George and her desire to be selfless and supportive of her sister. Along the way, she meets Kevin Doyle (James Marsden), a cynical journalist who sees through her façade and tries to help her see that she deserves better than the life she has settled for.
In the end, Jane must learn to put herself first and stand up for what she wants, even if it means going against her sister's wishes. With the help of her friends and Kevin, she finally finds the courage to confess her feelings to George and embrace her own happiness.
