25th Hour Movie Summary

Final Hours of Freedom

Crime,Drama  United States of America

The movie 25th Hour is a character study piece that follows the life of Monty Brogan (played by Edward Norton) as he spends his last 24 hours of liberty in New York City before starting his prison sentence for drug dealing. Monty is a former drug dealer and current bar owner who is facing seven years in prison, and his friends try to make it memorable.

His best friend, Frank (played by Barry Pepper), a straight-laced stockbroker, keeps Monty company as he prepares for the inevitable, while Monty's girlfriend, Naturelle (played by Rosario Dawson), deals with her own inner turmoil as she is suspected of being the informant that led to Monty's arrest.

Monty spends time with his father (played by Brian Cox), who is an emotionally distant and disappointed former firefighter, and his old high school friends (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Luis Guzmán), each dealing with their own personal problems and fears.

The movie is a meditation on New York City after the attacks of 9/11, and a reflection on the consequences of one man's actions. It highlights the sense of loss and uncertainty felt by all of the characters, both individually and collectively, as they come to terms with the changes in their environment and their own lives.

Throughout the film, Monty debates whether to flee to another country or take his punishment like a man. In the end, he chooses to face his future and goes to prison, leaving behind the people he most cares about. The film ends with a powerful shot of Monty on a bus, passing through the city and watching his friends and family continue on without him in the streets he once had the run of.
