In the film, Jeff Chang (played by Justin Chon) is a straight-A student at a prestigious university looking forward to his medical school interview the next day. However, his best friends, Casey (Skylar Astin) and Miller (Miles Teller), surprise him on his 21st birthday and convince him to go out and celebrate.
Initially reluctant, Jeff eventually agrees and the trio heads into town for a night of drinking and partying. As they visit various bars and clubs, Jeff becomes increasingly intoxicated and can barely stand. However, Casey and Miller refuse to let the party end and drag Jeff along with them, much to Jeff's chagrin.
The night goes from bad to worse as the trio gets into a variety of misadventures, including confrontations with college rivals, a run-in with a crazy sorority girl, and a wild car chase. Meanwhile, Jeff's father (Francois Chau) and his stern Asian-American doctor family members are worried about his safety and whereabouts.
As the night wears on, Jeff's condition worsens, and Casey and Miller realize they must get him home safely in time for his interview. Along the way, they must confront their own fears and insecurities as they navigate their various personal and professional relationships.
In the end, Jeff and his friends learn valuable lessons about responsibility, friendship, and growing up that will help them navigate their futures. The film is a raunchy comedy that serves as a coming-of-age tale for the millennial generation.
