The man referred to in the synopsis is actually Mike Enslin, an author who has written multiple books debunking haunted houses, hotels, and other paranormal occurrences. Despite his skepticism, Enslin has always been drawn to the infamous room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel, known for its long history of mysterious deaths and supernatural happenings.
Enslin arrives at the hotel, determined to spend the night in the room and document any activity that occurs. The hotel manager, Mr. Olin, initially tries to dissuade him from staying in the room, warning him of the dangers that lurk within. But Enslin ignores his warnings and insists on checking in.
Upon entering the room, Enslin is initially unimpressed. However, it isn't long before strange things begin happening. The clock radio continues to reset itself, the temperature drops dramatically, and the room seems to come alive with strange noises and unexplained movements.
As the night wears on, Enslin confronts a series of terrifying phenomena, including a ghostly apparition, a hallucination of his young daughter, and a flashback to a tragic event from his past. Throughout it all, he tries to maintain his own sanity and piece together what is happening in the room.
In the end, Enslin barely makes it out alive, having experienced firsthand the power of the malevolent spirit that haunts room 1408. Despite his previous skepticism, he is left shaken and humbled by the experience, adding a chilling chapter to his next book.
