Solomon Northup, a skilled violin player and family man, is lured by two men promising him a job as a musician in Washington, D.C. However, once he arrives, he is drugged, kidnapped, and sold into slavery. Stripped of his identity and freedom, Solomon is renamed "Platt" and transported to the deep South, where he is forced to work on plantations under harsh conditions.
Solomon is bought by a cruel and sadistic slave owner named Edwin Epps, who frequently subjects his slaves to physical and emotional abuse. Solomon witnesses the brutal mistreatment of his fellow slaves, particularly Patsey, a young woman whom Epps sexually assaults and torments.
Despite the dehumanizing circumstances, Solomon never loses hope of regaining his freedom. He tries to maintain his dignity and sanity by holding onto his true identity and using his intelligence and skills to survive. Solomon eventually befriends a Canadian carpenter named Samuel Bass, who offers him hope of gaining his freedom by sending letters to Solomon's friends in the North.
After enduring 12 years of slavery, Solomon is finally able to get in touch with his friends and family, who work tirelessly to secure his release. With the help of a local sheriff and legal assistance, Solomon is able to prove his identity and return home to his loved ones.
The film showcases the harrowing reality of slavery in the pre-Civil War South, as well as the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It sheds light on the injustices and atrocities of the institution of slavery, highlighting the importance of freedom and equality for all individuals.
