The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a live-action adaptation of the popular Nintendo video game franchise. Released in 1993, the film was directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, and starred Bob Hoskins as Mario, John Leguizamo as Luigi, and Dennis Hopper as the villainous King Koopa.
In the movie, Mario and Luigi are two plumbers living in Brooklyn who are called to fix a water main in the city. While working underground, they stumble upon a mysterious portal that leads them to the alternate dimension of Dinohattan. The world is ruled by King Koopa, a ruthless dictator who wants to merge Dinohattan with Earth to create a new, unified world.
After entering Dinohattan, Luigi is taken captive by Koopa's minions, while Mario teams up with a resistance fighter named Princess Daisy, who is also a love interest for Luigi, to save his brother and stop Koopa's plans. Along the way, they encounter various characters from the video game series, including Toad and Yoshi.
The movie received mixed reviews upon release and was a commercial failure, grossing only $20 million against a budget of $42 million. However, it gained a cult following among fans of the video game franchise and has since become a nostalgic favorite for many. Despite its commercial failure, it remains one of the most memorable video game adaptations ever made.
